Coming in at 10 feet 6 inches in length, the Flow 106X is highly durable, yet affordable, and it's solid construction is said to provide exceptional stability for riders of any level. If you haven't already noticed, stand up paddleboarding is currently one of the world's fastest growing water sports, a sport we here a BeSportier.com have been active in for years now!

In response to the growing popularity of the sport, Pelican introduced four new models for 2012. We were approached to test and review their most user-friendly version.  For an up close and personal view of the 106X, check out the collection of images below. It's as close to the action you'll get with out actually getting on the wet!

The Review:

Design: (8.5 out of 10) It doesn't take long to realize that much thought and effort went into the design of the 106X. Though from first appearances the board is some what bland, with no flashy graphics or design elements. The engineers and designers of the 106X were more concerned about functionality we believe, and that's exactly what it is... extremely functional. It's built from the same plastics that kayaks are, which makes it somewhat unique as you don't see many built from type of material. Some design aspects that we enjoyed most were the multiple handles, which make this board ultra easy to transport even though is does weigh in at a hefty 48lbs. Also we really were happy with the soft foam decking. It's quite comfortable and slip resistant, a must when you spend hours standing and paddling!

Stability: (9 out of 10) For beginners, it may take a few minutes to find your sea-legs, and you might even fall off once or twice, but overall the Flow 106X is an extremely stable platform for paddling flat to choppy waters. It even preformed nicely in small waves. It's most notable attributes are that it is wide (32in) and long (10ft 5in), which in both cases add to it's overall stability. Distributing your weight evenly across both feet while paddling is the most important tip we can give all new comers to paddleboarding. If you can do this, you'll have a safe and enjoyable paddling experience!

Tracking: (9 out of 10) The Flow 106X comes equipped with a detachable rubber fin. Use it! When attached and coupled with the board's grooved hull design, the board tracks like a dream and keeps you on target even in windy conditions.

Durability: (9 out of 10) Built from Ram-X which is known for its impact-resistance, its ability to regain its initial shape after a violent impact, and its UV-protected exterior finish, the Flow 106X was designed to last the test of time. In our short time with this paddleboard we noticed that it will scratch if dragged around or bumped by underwater rocks, but nothing that would compromise it's integrity on the water. Try to carry it more than you drag it (especially across pavement) and we believe that this board could be handed down for many years!

Value: (10 out of 10) This paddleboard is an extremely affordable, a great way to get out on the water. Many boards retail for anywhere from $800 to $1,200. The 106X gets you paddling for just less than $500 and comes with a two year warranty.

The Bottom Line: The Pelican Flow 106X SUP is an excellent paddleboard for all skill levels. It's stable, functional, and easy to transport. With gas prices jumping, paddleboarding would be a great activity to pick up this summer. Beyond the initial investment of purchasing the board and paddle, the rest is absolutely free! If you're contemplating purchasing a stand up paddleboard in the near future we suggest you give the Pelican Flow 106X some serious consideration, we highly recommend it.
