Great Wall Steed S review
If you're in the market for a durable work vehicle at an affordable price, which can still carry up to five passengers, then it is hard to ignore the Great Wall Steed S. This SUV pickup crossover can deal with rugged terrain and tough conditions, yet its spacious double cab also allows it to function as an everyday vehicle.
The Steed S is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-charged diesel engine that produces 141bhp. Any concerns that the vehicle's size would hinder economy will quickly prove groundless, as its combined cycle figures of 34mpg are more than impressive. Combine this with the Steed's 70-litre fuel tank and you can see why so many consumers are switching to diesel vehicles.
If you're planning to fully utilise the Steed's work vehicle credentials, its six-speed manual gearbox, featuring an electric 'shift on the move' selection between 2WD and 4WD, is able to deal with a multitude of driving conditions. For a small pickup, its payload of just over a tonne is yet another welcome attribute.
You may think a vehicle like this would go back to basics when it comes to interior features, but Great Wall has included several luxuries as standard. The Steed S has an Alpine CD radio with USB port and RDS for any traffic reports on the way to work. Four surround-sound speakers also produce a high standard of audio quality. What's more, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity enables the driver to talk hands-free while on the road. In addition, steering wheel audio controls mean your attention will never stray from what is ahead.
The sizeable cab is complemented by leather upholstery and individually heated front seats for those cold mornings. When the weather starts to improve however, air conditioning and full electric windows make the interior space an incredibly comfortable environment.
On the outside you'll find 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome detailing on the door handles and mirrors, colour coded bumpers and tinted glass. The Steed S is available in six colours with metallic options. Styling choices include a standard or commercial hardtop, side steps, load-liner, toolbox and a tow bar.
Safety and security
For those concerned with security, the Steed S has a Thatcham Category One alarm and immobiliser with keyless entry, ensuring any equipment or possessions are kept safe. Security-etched glass and locking wheel nuts also guarantee peace of mind.
The Steed S has been designed and manufactured to the highest European safety standards with galvanised body panels, a rustproof chassis and six-year anti-perforation warranty, adding to the vehicle's strong build.
Safety features include driver and passenger airbags, height adjustable front-seat belts, three point rear seat belts, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution.
Excluding VAT, the Steed S is available for just £13,998, making it the most affordable four-wheel-drive double-cab SUV pickup crossover on the market today. It also leads the way in insurance for this type of car as a group 7A vehicle.
The Great Wall Steed S is a robust pick-up truck that can deal with all aspects of the great outdoors, while being a comfortable and refined on-the-road vehicle.
